Pixy Liao Interview Response

So, I found this article on lens
culture about Pixy Liao and her ongoing project with her boyfriend. She’s been
using him as a prop in her photos for twelve years. There’s something
intriguing about the idea of even doing a project for twelve years straight. And
what’s even more intriguing is that she is exploring the changes in her and her
boyfriend’s relationship, and it co0mes through in her photographs. Her photographs
are intriguing because there’s a lot of loaded imagery and visual allegories
happening in them. A lot of her work has her and her boyfriend posing in them
and exploring this kind of power dynamic, but they connect to the viewer in a
very real way. One way that they connect to the viewer that this photograph is
a posed photograph for others to look at is the fact that you can see a wired
shutter release in a lot of the photos that trails off the image plane towards
the viewers. This remote too has an element of power and submission to it
because sometimes Pixy is holding the remote and sometimes it’s her boyfriend. All
these elements make the photos kind of dark and unsettling, but the lighting and
colors are warm and friendly lending an aura of surrealism to the photos.
